AppleTV Sucks, but doesn’t have to
Dear Steve:
People still like instant gratification, that’s why Apple TV sucks.

AppleTV SUCKS because it lacks live broadcast TV.
Broadcast TV provides instant gratification. We turn it on, and get entertained NOW
iTunes (as-is) doesn’t always provide instant gratification. Looking for a show, deciding whether to pay for it, then waiting for it download takes tiiime. We turn it on, and get entertained THEN (as in the future)
It’s simple. When we want to zone out, when we wanna flick on the boob-tube and stop thinking we watch TV because it’s dumb and instant. We (the people) are happy when we’re dumb and gratified.

If Apple thought that people would switch totally to downloading TV shows and movies all the time from iTunes instead of watching Cable or Satellite TV they underestimated how lazy we are. But I think Apple may now have gotten their heads out of their asses in this respect.
I believe Apple now realizes that they could probably put a kick ass new spin on current broadcast TV. Providing the ability to watch and record live TV, watch your already downloaded TV shows and movies, AND download and rent even more from one single system just makes sense.
If these rumours are true, than AppleTV gets the Matt Stamp of Approval. YEEEEEE HAW. http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/20/apple-tv-set-by-2011/

I think you’re underestimating apple. Contrast them with Sony, who tries to create standards out of the gate (i.e. Walkmen, Memory sticks, Blu-Ray et cetera). Apple doesn’t put all the eggs in the basket right away as people get excited over new features, and it probably makes their software and hardware better as they get feedback on their early models or software versions. Then you have to think of how it feeds to the frenzy and how they already have an installed base.
I think it’s not a Tivo killer yet, but now that HD is here, along with internet connected appliances, we will see it become a bigger player in the next few years.
After all, to stay relevant on an Internet TV appliance, they essentially just need to provide a software update as the Apple TV already has it covered on the hardware side of things.

Aha. It looks like they’re looking to take a share of the cable market.
Apple is pitching a monthly subscription service to the TV networks, an iTunes-based alternative to cable packages that would cost about $30 per month.
